Couple arrested for faking robbery, killing security guard in Odisha

Sambalpur: A young couple has been arrested in Odisha’s Burla today on charges of killing a security guard who resisted robbery at his employer’s house last month.

“The son and daughter-in-law of the contractor have been arrested for engineering robbery and then killing the security guard. Cash and other gold jewellery have been recovered from the couple. They have confessed to have committed the crime,” Sambalpur SP Sanjeev Arora told media.

The husband-wife duo was at odds with Ashok Singh – a Burla-based contractor.  Singh opposed the marriage of his youngest son Karan Singh (20) with Sherjit Kaur (23). Despite stiff resistance, Karan got married to Sherjit, who is elder to her husband.

Since then, Ashok had a strained relationship with the couple and had stopped supporting them financially.

On August 28, Ashok and his youngest son went out of town for some reason. Karan and Sherjit too move out for Rourkela. However, they returned back to their home after some time.

While no one was at home except the security guard, the duo hurriedly stashed cash, jewellery and other valuables in a bag. The unsuspecting security guard entered into the room and found them executing their nefarious plan. When he objected to it, the husband-wife pair strangled him to death and fled from the spot.

Scientific team and sniffer dogs were pressed into service during investigation. The investigators suspected the hand of an insider in the crime. After detailed probe, the cops zeroed in on the couple leading to their arrest.

Rs 75, 000 cash and gold jewellery have been recovered from them.
