Couple critical after youth sets house on fire over past rivalry in Odisha village

Sources said the accused Bisikesan Bhuyan, a resident of the same village, committed the act out of vengeance as he had past enmity with Arjun.

Kaptipada: In a shocking incident, a couple suffered major burn injuries and is now critical after a youth reportedly set their house on fire over past enmity in Kaptipada block of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha on Sunday night. The victims were identified as Arjun Dandapata and his wife Sumati of Nuasahi village under Kaptipada police limits here. The accused Bisikesan Bhuyan, a resident of the same village, is absconding.

Sources said Bisikesan committed the act out of vengeance as he had past enmity with Arjun. On Sunday night, when Arjun and Sumati were sleeping, Bisikesan went over to their place and set the house on fire. He then fled the spot Hearing the couple’s screams, locals gathered at the spot and somehow managed to rescue the husband-wife duo. While the house was entirely gutted, Arjun and Sumita were grievously hurt.

As both had suffered major burn injuries, they were immediately rushed to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Government Medical College and Hospital (PRM-MCH) and till reports last came in, were undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, family members of the victims alleged that Bisikesan resorted to this act entirely out of spite and demanded action against him. “This is pure act of vengeance and panic has gripped the entire village. POlice must act soon and take action against the accused,” said Jharana Dandapata.

Kaptipada police on getting information reached the spot and has started investigation. A case has been registered.
