COVID-19 cases in Odisha spike alarmingly; here’re details
While the virus has spread to all 30 districts in the state, 13 districts now have over 100 positive cases.
Bhubaneswar: Odisha, which reported its first COVID-19 case in mid March, has registered a quantum jump in positive cases during the past one month with highest 225 cases reported in the last 24 hours. With the fresh cases, the single-day tally crossed 200 for the first time in the state.
While the virus has spread to all 30 districts in the state, 13 districts have over 100 positive cases. With the first case reported on March 15, the doubling rate has worsened in the state. As many as 2500 cases have been reported in last 25 days.
Odisha’s COVID-19 Statistics:
The statistics shows Odisha took 40 days to report first 100 cases by April 25, the doubling time reduced to 11 days after the total count crossed 200-mark on May 6. Thereafter, in only three days the number climbed to 300-mark on May 9 and 400-mark on May 11. The total count crossed 500-mark after the state reported first 3-digit positive cases (101) on a single day on May 12.
The tally doubled from 500 to 1000 cases in just 7 days i.e on May 19. Thereafter, it took just six days to reach the 1500-mark i.e on May 25 and another six days to reach 2000-mark i.e May 31. From 2000, the tally surged to 3000 in a period of only eight days i.e on June 8 and further to 3500 in just five days i.e on June 13 (today).
The sudden record spike in positive cases in Odisha could be attributed to the returning of migrants from other states, mainly Gujarat and West Bengal.

Recently, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said while foreign returnees, Nizamuddin returnees and migrant returnees were major challenges for the state’s fight against COVID-19 earlier, the situation will be very crucial in the month of June following resumption of flight and train services.
As per official data, the state’s tally now stands at 3723, including 1236 active cases. Ganjam has highest 678 positive cases followed by Khordha (334), Jajpur (329) and Cuttack (311). Among the total cases, 136 are personnel of NDRF, ODRAF and Fire Services who returned to the state from West Bengal recently after restoration work post cyclone Amphan.
However, 2474 patients have recovered in the state whereas 10 persons died due to the virus so far.
