Crorepati Junior Engineer arrested by Odisha Vigilance

Bhubaneswar: Basant Kumar Bastia, Junior Engineer, Boinda Rural Works Section, Angul district was today arrested by the Odisha Vigilance for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Sleuths of the anti-corruption agency had yesterday raided multiple places including the engineer’s houses and office room. In course of search and inventory, Bastia was found in possession of assets worth Rs 1,89,01,661 including one four-storied building, one double-storied building, 7 plots, one four wheeler, two numbers of two-wheelers, deposits in different banks, investment in insurance policies, gold and silver ornaments, cash of more than Rs 1.7 lakh and household articles.

The income, expenditure and assets of Bastia was calculated and he was found in possession of assets disproportionate to the known sources of income to the tune of Rs 1,75,80,325 which constitutes about 427% of his known sources of income.

A case was registered against him by the Vigilance and he was arrested. He was produced before the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack and remanded to judicial custody till November 18.
