Cuttack: Asthma patient dies at SCB Hospital due to lack of oxygen

Cuttack: An asthma patient died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here today allegedly due to shortage of oxygen.

The deceased was identified as Bhababat Mohanty (82) of Balasore district. According to reports, the elderly man was initially admitted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital due to breathing-related issue and later shifted to the SCB Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

The octogenarian, however, breathed his last at the hospital during treatment

His family members alleged that he was not provided oxygen while being shifted from Casualty ward to Medicine ward. “We requested the hospital staffers for oxygen support to the patient but they told us that there was no oxygen. He remained in such state for around an hour and later died. Negligence on the part of the hospital authorities led to the death. On the other hand, Abinash Rout, Administrative Officer of the SCB Hospital, said a committee will probe into the allegations.

“I have held discussion with the medical superintendent in this regard. We have also talked to the HOD of Medicine Department. A committee will be formed to ascertain negligence, if any. Action will be taken against those found guilty,” said Rout.
