Cyber fraud on rise in Odisha; people duped of Rs 1.40 cr in May

Bhuabaneswar: Despite awareness, the number of cyber fraud cases continues to rise in the state with a whopping Rs 1.40 crore cheated from people by fraudsters in the month of May.

As per the information shared by the Commissionerate Police, cyber fraudsters have duped gullible people of Rs 1, 40,09,469 in May as against Rs 1,19,63,297 in April. Of the total Rs 1.40 crore, Rs 70,78, 714 has been defrauded from people in Bhubaneswar alone. Total 17 cyber crime cases were registered during the period.

However, the  cyber police have recovered Rs 12 05,306 defrauded money so far.

“The Cyber Help Desk received total 529 calls in May: 256 from Bhubaneswar alone and rest 273 from other parts of the state. Of the total calls, 160 were related to UPI fraud  and 100 were credit and debit card fraud,” said the police.

Earlier last month, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash had cautioned the citizens not to share their personal information like bank details, OTP, Adhaar number and DOB with anyone to save themselves from being trapped by cyber fraudsters during the lockdown.
