Cycle pump tubectomy: Odisha govt suspends ADMO, CHC in-charge

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Angul, Dec 23:

The Odisha government today suspended the Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) of Angul district Dr Shankarlal Agarwal and the Community Health Centre (CHC) in-charge if Banarpal Dr Deepak Garnaik in connection with the conduct of tubectomies at a sterilization camp at Banarpal CHC using a bicycle pump, informed Angul collector Sachin Ramchandra Yadav.

The incident which was reported in the media had drawn both national and international attention.

It may be noted here that in shocking violation of essential safety norms, a bicycle pump was used to pump air into the abdomen of women undergoing tubectomy operation at Banarpal CHC in Angul district on November 28.

The surgeon Dr Mahesh Prasad Rout had however, defended the procedure saying that the use of such pumps is commonplace.

The state government, which drew flak from all quarters for the irregularities committed at the sterilization camp, announced the blanket ban on all sterilization camps after a high level meeting on December 2.

After the incident drew national and international media attention, the Centre and Odisha Human Rights Commission sought a report on the issue from the state government.
