Cyclone Kyant: Odisha CM calls emergency meeting

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik called an emergency meeting for tomorrow to hold discussions regarding preparedness in view of possible cyclonic storm ‘Kyant’.

Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Mohapatra today advised farmers of the state to keep the harvested crops covered in their yards.

Collectors of coastal districts, ODRAF and Fire service units have been asked to be on alert, Mohapatra said.

“The state government is well prepared to face any possible eventuality. We are in constant touch with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi,” he said, adding that there is no need to panic.

“The deep depression over east central Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. It will move northwards for some time and then recurve initially north-northwestwards and then northwestwards. It is very likely to reach northwest Bay of Bengal in the morning of 27th of October. Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely to commence along and off Odisha coast from October 27,” a bulletin of the IMD said.

“The cyclone may recurve from Myanmar coast and the model indicates that it would move towards northwest Bay of Bengal. The impact of the cyclonic storm on Odisha would be around October 26-27. It is likely to have impact on central and north Odisha,” said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Director Sarat Chandra Sahu.

Distant Cautionary Signal Number One (DC-I) has been hoisted at all ports in Odisha and the fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into interior/distant sea along the Odisha coast.
