Cyclone may cross Tamil Nadu coast on November 11; Check latest IMD forecast

Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic storm may form over the Bay of Bengal and cross Tamil Nadu coast during the morning of November 11, weather models indicated.

GFS, ECMWF and NCUM models are indicating intensification of the forecasted system up to depression. However, the system may turn into a cyclonic storm with high intensity, as per IMD GFS model.

The system will be named as Cyclone Jawad if it intensifies into a Cyclonic Storm.

“Most of the models including GFS, ECMWF and NCUM are indicating further intensification of the likely low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal up to depression over southwest Bay of Bengal around 10th November. However, IMD GFS is indicating intensification up to high intensity cyclonic storm. However, all models are unanimous about the movement of the system towards Tamil Nadu coast during 8th-11th November and its crossing in the morning hours of 11th November,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“The cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea, extending up to 5.8 Km above mean sea level persisted there at 1130 hrs IST of today, the 08th November. Under its influence, a low pressure area is very likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during next 24 hours. It is likely to move west – northwestwards, concentrate into a Depression and reach near north Tamil Nadu coast by the early morning of 11th November, 2021. In association with this formation, there would be a continuation of the ongoing active rain spell over Tamil Nadu during 8th – 11th November,” the IMD said in its bulletin issued at 2.10 PM, today.

9th Nov: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall falls at isolated places very likely over Tamil Nadu and heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

10th Nov: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

11th Nov: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall & extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over coastal Tamil Nadu south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

12th Nov: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Tamil Nadu.

Wind warning

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal on 9th & 10th November, over southwest Bay of Bengal during 10th – 11th November and along & off Tamil Nadu & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts on 11th November.
