‘Debt-ridden’ farmer commits suicide in Odisha

Ganjam: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Odisha’s Ganjam district today, by consuming poison.

The deceased, identified as Sanyasi Swain, a native of Tankachhai village under Purusottampur block of the district.

Swain, according to his family members, had consumed poison on Monday evening due to crop loss and mounting loan burden. He succumbed while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur this afternoon.

The family members of the deceased farmer alleged that Swain was under severe depression after his standing crops got damaged in Cyclone Titli and subsequent floods in October.

The farmer believed he would not be able to repay the loan, which forced him to take the drastic step, a local said.

There was no official version on what actually led the farmer to end his life till the time of filing this report. We will update the story as more information becomes available.
