This was revealed during a review meeting held recently at the state secretariat to to take stock of the rainfall, crop coverage and seed distribution to the farmers.

Odisha has received 209.4 mm rainfall during September this year. However, the cumulative rainfall in the state from June to end of September is 1098 mm, which is 4% less than normal.

The cumulative rainfall received in Jagatsinghpur during the period is severely deficient, said official sources.

The review of cumulative rainfall at block level reveals that five blocks Belapada of Bolangir district, Tangi Choudwar and Kantapada of Cuttack district, Garadpur of Kendrapada district and Gopa of Puri district have received scanty rainfall.

While the rainfall has improved during September, as compared to the last three months, as many as 18 blocks in 12 districts have received severe deficit rainfall.

However, director of the Bhubaneswar Met centre, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said one or two spells of  extensive rains may visit the state before and during the Puja and that will help the standing crops.

Officials of the Agriculture department said the overall picture during this monsoon is encouraging and close to normal.

The meeting was informed that the government has supplied seeds of 5.29 lakh quintal against the target of 6.91 lakh quintal in the Kharif season. The total paddy seeds supplied is 5.05 lakh quintal as against the target of 6.68 lakh quintal.
