Bhubaneswar, Aug 6:

The spread of dengue has assumed alarming proportions in Odisha with a total of 86 patients admitted to hospitals across 15 districts.

Out of 86 patients identified till Tuesday evening, the condition of 10 patients was stated to be critical.Dengue SMALLSIZE

Out of 993 blood sample tests conducted so far, 66 have been identified as dengue positive through NS-1 ELISA test and 20 others through IGM ELISA test.

It may be mentioned that there was no report of any dengue related death in the state in August last year, though the number of patients was higher than this year.

While a maximum of 17 patients have been identified from Jajpur district, Cuttack and Khordha districts have 11 patients each.

While the state government says there has been just one dengue death so far, unofficial sources have put the number much higher.

The state government has claimed that Gangadhar Sethi of Jagatsinghpur district, who died of dengue on July 28, had carried the virus from Bengaluru. Similarly, 20 other patients, presently under treatment, have also carried the virus from other states.

However, the senior doctors and experts have ruled out such contention and said that compared to last year, the rate and intensity of infection is far more acute this year.

Among many of the patients, the infection has not been limited to simple fever as 10 patients out of the 86 affected have suffered hemorrhages, they have pointed out.
