Depression likely to cross Odisha coast around midnight of today. Know impacts

Bhubaneswar: Heavy downpour is most likely to mar Diwali festivities in Odisha as the low pressure area over Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and it has been predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that the system would cross Odisha coast between Puri and Chandbali around midnight of today/early morning of tomorrow.

“The well marked low pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 19th October 2017 over west-central Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood near lat. 16.5° N and long. 86.5° E, about 370 km south southeast of Puri and 470 km south of Chandbali. The system very likely to move initially north northwestwards and cross Odisha coast between Puri and Chandbali around midnight of today/early morning of tomorrow,” a bulletin of the IMD said.

It is also very likely to intensify further into a deep depression during next 18 hours, the bulletin added.

Possible Impacts:

  • Heavy to very heavy rain at a few places over coastal Odisha and heavy rain at isolated places over interior Odisha likely on October 19.
  • Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning very likely at isolated places over Odisha on October 19.
  • Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph very likely along & off Odisha coast on October 19.
  • Heavy to very heavy rain very likely at a few places over coastal Odisha and heavy rain at isolated places over interior Odisha on October 20.
  • Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 Kmph very likely along & off Odisha coast on October 20.
