Sambalpur: Former Sambalpur University Vice-Chancellor Dhrubaraj Naik was today murdered by a miscreant, who barged into the former's house and asked for giving him Rs 100, family sources said.
The incident took place at his residence in Kuarmal around 11 AM, when the accused carrying an axe in an inebriated state entered the house, reached the bedroom and asked the deceased's family members to give him the amount. As Dhrubaraj Naik opposed him, the assailant hacked him with the axe, leaving him critically injured at the spot.
He was rescued and rushed to a private hospital in Jharsuguda, where he succumbed to injuries during treatment.
Laikera police have started an investigation and detained the accused, a resident of the locality, for questioning.
