Draft SOP prepared to contain gender-based violence in Odisha

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at containing gender-based violence in the state was approved today in a meeting of the interdepartmental committee chaired by the Developmental Commissioner here. The SOP will come in force following the approval of the State Government.

According to information provided by Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Aarti Ahuja, the SOP is based on several points mentioned in the Constitution of India.

“We have prepared the SOP to ensure interdepartmental coordination while combating gender-based violence. We have taken the feedback of concerned departments before preparing the guidelines. Suggestions from the report of Justice Mohanty committee have also been incorporated,” said Ahuja.

“We have detailed several angles such as psycho-social counselling, facilitation of legal assistance, filing of FIR, medical examination, time limit to submit the medical examination report, filing of chargesheet, rehabilitation of the victim etc in the SOP,” she added.

Further, the SOP covers various other key points including safety and security of the victims, prevention of disclosure of identity, treatment, collection of evidence, role of police etc. Provisions have also been made to mandate action in case of violation of the SOP by government officials.
