Dreaded criminal hurt in encounter in Odisha capital

A dreaded criminal, involved in the murder of a liquor salesman in the Old Town area in Odisha capital on February 2, was hurt in an encounter with the police in the city in the late night hours on Saturday.

The history-sheeter, identified as Bibhu Jena (24), was rushed to the Capital Hospital from where he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where his condition is stated to be critical, police said.

The incident took place at about 2.30 AM.

Briefing newsmen here today, twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said a special squad of the commissionerate police, while on a night patrol last night, found two bike-borne youths moving from Kalinganagar area towards Ghatikia. On seeing the police, they tried to speed up their bike, but lost their balance at a turning and fell down.

“Suddenly, one of the youths opened five rounds of fire at the police who retaliated with two rounds of fire. While one youth managed to escape, another youth, who sustained bullet injuries on his right leg, was overpowered. The injured youth, identified as Bibhu, was later taken to the Capital Hospital from where he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack where his condition was stated to be critical”, Sharma said.

“Police have seized one 7.65 mm pistol, four live bullets, cash worth Rs 11,000 and one bike from Bibhu”, he said, adding that the police later arrested four members of the gang following information by Bibhu during interrogation.

Stating that the 14-member gang is involved in several dacoity and burglary cases, Sharma said three teams of commissionerate police, in the meanwhile, are conducting search operations in Brahmapur, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to nab the other associates of Bibhu, and another mastermind, Rabi.

It may be mentioned that Aditya Pradhan, a 35-year-old youth from Jagatsinghpur and a salesman at a foreign liquor shop located at Garage Chhak in the Lingaraj area, was on the way to Sriram Nagar area to hand over the keys of the shop and Rs 40,000 cash to his owner when some goons followed him on a bike and stopped him near a club and stabbed him to death with sharp weapons.
