Durga ashtami vrat is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga. Masik Durga Ashtami is observed on the ashtami tithi of the shukla paksha of every month of the Hindu calendar.

Weapons of Goddess Durga are worshiped on this day. The ritual is known as Astra Puja. This day is also known as Virashtami.

Devotees offer prayers to Goddess Durga and keep fast to seek blessings on this occasion.

Durga Ashtami Vrat Rituals:

Devotees wake up early in the morning, take bath, and make several offerings to the Goddess in the form of flowers, chandan and dhoop.

Naivedya is also prepared for offering to the Goddess.

Fasting is an important ritual of Durga Ashtami. Observer of this vrat abstains from eating or drinking throughout the day.

Some devotees also keep the fast by having milk and fruits.

Consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly prohibited on this day.

Observer of this vrat sleeps on the floor.

Devotees also chant mantra of the Goddess and Durga Chalisa on this day. At the end of puja, Durga Ashtami Vrat katha is read by them.

Vrat observers also provide food and dakshina to Brahmins after completing the puja rituals.

They visit temples of the Goddess in the evening.

Durga Ashtami Vrat Significance

Durga Ashtami Vrat is observed to acquire spiritual gains and seek the blessings of Goddess Durga.

It is believed that one who observes the Durga Ashtami Vrat with full dedication will be bestowed with happiness and good fortune.
