Earth Hour 2022 Time, Theme, History, Significance

Earth Hour is observed in over 190 countries and territories at 8:30 pm on the last Saturday of March every year with the objective to take action on and raise awareness of the issues that the earth faces.

Supporters of the Earth Day celebration believe that the event is a  movement for mankind’s own future, for the benefit of people and planet. It is considered a catalyst for change, harnessing the power of the crowd.

Earth Hour is organized every year by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is generally celebrated by individuals, communities and businesses by turning off non-essential lights for one hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm as a gesture of commitment to the planet Earth. It was first celebrated as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

The theme for Earth Hour 2022 is ‘Shape Our Future’.

“Humans are the cause of climate change, but we are also the solution. Together, we can take action to #ShapeOurFuture,” Earth Hour Official tweeted on Wednesday.

This apart, earthhour.org suggested ‘seven meaningful ways’ to spend Earth Hour 2022. They are:

  1. Reconnect with nature.
  2. Cook up a meal with your family or friends.
  3. Spend time with your loved ones.
  4. Up your knowledge.
  5. Connect with (and give back to) your community.
  6. Get active.
  7. Discover your artistic side.
