Eid celebrated with gaiety in Odisha capital

Muslims across Odisha celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr as they marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan today.

Thousands of Muslims thronged the Jama Masjid in Unit III and the Capital Masjid in Unit IV here at around 8 am this morning and offered namaz. The namaz was read out by Imam Roushan Zameer Noori and Shahi Imam Mufti Abrar at Unit-III and Unit-IV masjids respectively.

Head of All Odisha Chand Committee (AOCC) Mufti Wajibul Kamar said that Muslims observed Eid-ul-Fitr today after they had a look at the moon yesterday night, which was officially declared by AOCC at around 11 pm. But some people observed this ritual before the scheduled official declared time.

Yesterday, Muslims were busy purchasing new clothes, food articles, fruits Lacha, Semei, Khajara fruits, Atara and other articles to observe Eid.

After eating prepared Lacha and Semei at their respective homes today, Muslims gathered at the aforesaid mosques in large numbers to recite Namaz followed by Samavesh. Later, Muslims of all ages, from kids to elderly people, greeted and hugged each other wishing ‘Eid Mubarak’ at the mosques premises. “Around 10,000 people in both mosques prayed for peace and progress in their personal lives as well as the State and the country,” informed the AOCC head.

The authorities had made adequate security arrangements to ensure smooth flow of traffic near the mosques and to prevent any untoward incident.

Muslims, who had observed day time fast for the last one month, visited friends and relatives and feasted on a variety of delicacies after prayers today. The celebrations would continue till late in the night when people invite their friends and relatives over for prepared items such as Biriyani, Roost Kabab, Chilly Chicken, Chicken Korma, Mutton Mughlai etc in dinner.

Interestingly, more Hindus than the Muslims were seen buying Lacha, semei, Atara and other articles from the shops set up by Muslims at the mosque premises.

Other places in and around the city like Jadupur, Balianta, Jharpada, Sundarpada, Jharanasahi, Unit-VIII, Satyanagar, Cuttack Road, Sainik School, Sikharchandi and CRPF Battalion, Muslims celebrated EID in their respective mosques.

Local MLA and city Mayor visited the Muslim-dominated localities to greet people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
