Elephant calf succumbs to GI infection in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, May 9:

The four-month-old elephant calf rescued from a forest in Kalahandi district succumbed to gastrointestinal infection today at the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry under the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology.

According to sources, Mama—the elephant calf—had taken ill since last few days following which she was admitted to the veterinary college and hospital here. She passed away this morning while undergoing treatment, sources said.

It may be recalled that the calf was abandoned by the heard in a forest in Madanpur Rampur block in Kalahandi district on January 20 this year. The newborn was rescued from the jungle by the forest officials and sent to Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here.

Last month, she was admitted to the Centre for Wildlife Health College of the varsity where she was treated for diarrhoea.
