Locals spotted the carcass of a four-year old elephant lying in a vegetable field and informed Forest department officials, said DFO, Sundargarh, Arjun Behera. “The carcass has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the reason behind its death,” he said.

“We suspect it could have died of food poisoning as its tusks are intact”, said the DFO.

“We had seen it roaming in the area in a herd of 20 elephants on Saturday, which had damaged vegetable crops and a boundary wall of a house”, said villagers of Sanpatrapalli.
