Elephant ‘Nanda’ dies at Chandaka sanctuary in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Ailing elephant ‘Nanda’ died at the Chandaka-Dampara sanctuary, today. The pachyderm breathed its last at around 3 am.

The tusker was suffering from fever. However, the exact cause of the death can be known after autopsy, a Forest official said.

According to reports, the animal showed symptoms of illness on May 14. Next day, a team of experts from OUAT were engaged for the treatment of the elephant.

‘Nanda’, a trained kumki elephant, was born in 1987 at the Nandankanan Zoological Park. It was shifted to Kumarakhunti of Chandaka in October, 2010, where the animal was trained to prevent the menace of stray elephants.
