While the parents of Mahaprasad Swain (26) are convinced that he was murdered, the police have sought to pass it off as a case of death due to accident.

“I am sure someone murdered my son,” said Balaram Swain, the father of the deceased.

“Mahaprasad was a quiet student and was always involved in extra curricular activities in the college. Yesterday night, he left home saying that he will attend the annual function of the college. Late in the night, he called up to say he would return home late due to some problem with one of his friends in college,” he added.

Mahaprasad’s body was found in mysterious circumstances along the road divider opposite the Indian Oil office in the wee hours today. The family learnt about the death from local police, who contacted from the mobile phone found in his pocket.

A native of Nimapada village in Puri district, Mahaprasad was a final year engineering (Civil) student at College of Engineering Bhubaneswar (CEB) under Chandrasekharpur police limits.

According to police sources, after getting information that two people on a motor cycle had met with an accident on the road just opposite Indian Oil office in Chandrasekharpur area, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered both the bodies. Later, the two were sent to the Capital hospital here in the city.

Mahaprasad was declared dead by the doctors in the hospital while his friend, who had sustained severe injuries, was admitted for treatment, police sources said.

After the customary autopsy on the body of Mahaprasad, family members and relatives of the deceased took his body in a procession and staged a demonstration in front of the Commissionerate police headquarters office here demanding a thorough enquiry into the matter.

The protest was called off after ACP Aseem Panda intervened in the matter and assured them that the case would be investigated thoroughly.

Meanwhile, the body of the engineering student was taken to his native place in Nimapada for cremation in the afternoon.
