Cuttack, Mar 22:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Election Commission of India to take adequate steps to ensure that no minors are engaged in any activities in the ensuing elections scheduled in April.

The directive of the Commission has come in response to a petition filed by human rights activist Akhand.

The petitioner had alleged that several political parties have engaged minor children in various works like fixing posters, distributing leaflets and participating in the rallies.

“This apart, these children are also being engaged to carry electronic voting machines (EVMs) and other ancillary works in gross violation of human rights”, he pointed out.

However, the EC, in a reply to the rights panel, has assured to take adequate measures within eight weeks and would also inform about the action taken by it during the period.
