Former Odisha Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang has scotched speculation about his quitting the Congress and joining the BJP.

In an interview to leading TV news channel OTV today, Gamang said there was no basis to such talk. “Those who talked about it in the media never authenticated it with me before going public. They never talked to me nor did I talk to anyone about it. Only they can clarify why they did it,” he said washing his hands of the comments made by his son Sisir, which spawned the speculation.

On Tuesday, Sisir had told the media that a decision on joining a new party would be formally announced in the next five days. He had followed it up with another comment yesterday where he said ‘we’ (meaning his father and him) would join a national party rather than a regional one, lending further strength to talk of the father-son duo joining the saffron party.

The nine-time MP from Koraput, however, made it clear today that no party had contacted him nor had he contacted any party on his own. “I have not left the Congress and there is no truth in reports suggesting that I am planning to quit,” Gamang said.

Sisir, however, stood his ground after his father’s comments today latching on to the fact that his father had not ‘denied’ the report. “He has not denied the report. Just wait for a few days more and everything will be clear,” he told the same channel.
