Ex SCB supt gets 4-month jail for failure to dispose of biomedical waste

In a significant verdict, the SDJM court in Cuttack today awarded four months’ imprisonment to Dr Dhirendranath Moharana, former superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital, after holding him guilty in a criminal case filed by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on SCB Medical College and Hospital. The OSPCB had filed a criminal case against the hospital on charges of failure in disposal and management of bio-medical waste in the hospital premises.

“If any authority, hospital or clinic or pathological laboratory fails to maintain that standard, the Board is within its rights to file cases against them. The court has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on SCB Medical College and Hospital. Secondly, Dr DN Moharana has been awarded four months’ imprisonment on conviction,” informed Prafulla Kumar Lenka, counsel for OSPCB.
