Fake Intel report: Odisha cops to grill BJP social media cell members

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has begun investigation into an allegation levelled by the State unit of the BJP Yuva Morcha citing an intelligence report of Odisha Police claimimg the BJD President and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik chose to contest from Bijepur fearing defeat in Hinjilikatu Assembly segment in the upcoming polls. The State Police Chief had earlier termed the ‘Intel report’ as “fake and fabricated”.

The cops will grill the staff manning the social media account of the State unit of BJP. “The employees of the social media unit of the particular political party will be brought under the purview of investigation,” said Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty.

The top cop also informed that people involved in conducting the press meet will also be investigated in connection with the incident.

The police, according to Mohanty, will also probe the purpose behind the incident, if any.

On Monday evening, the State DGP had rejected the claim of the State BJYM President Tankadhar Tripathy, saying the intelligence report as “fake and fabricated”. A case was also registered by the Odisha Police in this connection.

“A fake document purported to be assessment report of some assembly segments by Odisha Police Intelligence Department has been shown in a press meet by a political party. It is clarified that the document is absolutely fake & fabricated. An FIR is being registered in this matter,” DGP RP Sharma had tweeted.

Worth mentioning, the advisory printed and stamped under the letterhead of Odisha Police State Intelligence Branch Bhubaneswar advised Naveen to pick from four alternatives suggested by it. They are – Rourkela, Bijepur, Balangir and Titlagarh.

Patnaik, a four-time Chief Minister, on Monday had announced that he will contest from two Assembly constituencies: Bijepur in Bargarh district and Hinjili in Ganjam district in the forthcoming polls.
