Father of Odisha Psychology studies Prof Radhanath Rath dies

Eminent Odisha psychology professor, Prof Radhanath Rath, regarded as one of the best psycholgy academicians in both national and international levels passed away at the Apollo Hospital here this evening.

He was 96.

Prof Rath had founded Psychology department at Ravenshaw College, Cuttack and the first and largest Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in Psychology in India at Vani Vihar (Utkal University), Bhubaneswar, way back in 1958. Under his leadership as the head of CAS, Utkal University had tie-ups with universities in England, Sweden and Netherlands.

A national fellow, Prof Rath obtained his PhD degree from England in 1946.

He was a Fellow in Psychology and Social Sciences, 1981 and taught in the capacity of a visiting professor at Concordia University, Canada; Birmingham University, UK, and Malmo University, Sweden. He had been the past-president of the Psychology Section of the Indian Science Congress, as also the chairperson of the International Cross-cultural Psychology Conference, 1981.

A recipient of several national and international awards, he had several publications to his credit.

His autobiography in Odia ‘Mo Swapna, Mo Jibana’ ( My Dreams, My Life ) received the Odsha Sahitya Akademi award in 1981.
