Finance Commission for higher salaries to Odisha PR functionaries

The 14th Finance Commission has recommended to the Odisha government a nearly 30% raise in the salary and perks of Panchayat representatives from the 2017-18 fiscal.
The Commission, in its report, has recommended a hike in the monthly salary of Zilla Parishad (ZP) chairperson by Rs 8000, ZP vice-chairperson by Rs 6000, Panchayat Samiti (PS) chairperson by Rs 4000, ZP member by Rs 3500, PS vice-chairperson by Rs 2500, PS member and Sarpanch by Rs 2000 and Naib Sarpanch by Rs 1000.
Apart from recommending a hike of Rs 200 in the meeting allowance of these aforesaid representatives, the Commission has also asked the state government to increase the dearness allowance (DA) of the ZP chairperson, vice-chairperson and members by Rs 150 each, PS chairperson, vice chairperson and members by Rs 100 each and Panchayat representatives by Rs 50.
The Commission has also asked the government to make provisions for meeting allowance and DA for ward members.
Besides, the Commission has asked the government to raise the annual travel allowance (TA) of the ZP chairperson and vice-chairperson by Rs 15,000 and Rs 5000 respectively.
With the revised salary and perks as recommended by the Commission, the annual expenditure of the state government on this count will go up to Rs 93 crore from Rs 61 crore, official sources said.
