Bhubaneswar: As the World Mental Health Day will be celebrated tomorrow to create awareness about mental health, someone does ponder over how to strengthen their brains. Study shows there are some food items which can improve brain health and sharpen memory.

These foods are easily available and will not cost someone a bomb.

 

Leafy greens like broccoli, collards and spinach contain various nutrients such as Vitamin K, Lutein, folate and beta carotene. Researchers found that Vitamin K helps in formation of fat inside brain cells and improves memory.

 

As eggs contain Vitamin B and Choline, it help slow cognitive decline. Deficiencies in Vitamin B have been associated with depression and dementia.

 

Tea and coffee contain caffeine, that boost brain function and improve alertness, as well as antioxidants. Besides, Green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine which can cross the blood-brain barrier and increase neurotransmitter activity.

Turmeric is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substance. It can pass through the blood-brain barrier to enter the brain directly. The dark-yellow spice improves memory, minimises depression, and helps growth of new brain cells.

Whole grains such as pasta, barley, brown rice and oatmeal contain Vitamin E, which is used to protect and preserve healthy cells, thereby improves brain function.

Certain fruits such as oranges, tomatoes, bell peppers, guava, kiwi and strawberries, contain high amounts of Vitamin C and prevent brain cells from becoming damaged. A study has found that Vitamin C can prevent Alzheimer’s.

Pumpkin seeds contain antioxidants, zinc, magnesium, copper and iron. The brain uses copper and zinc for controlling nerve signals, magnesium for learning and memory, and iron to prevent brain fog.
