The CUG scheme will make the police system more accessible to the people, speakers at a function organised for the launch of the scheme emphasised.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr R P Sharma and other police officials including Inspectors-in-charge (IICs) of the respective police stations in both the cities, were preset on the occasion.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, DR Sharma said, “The CUG number has been allotted to 43 police stations functioning under commissionerate police – 23 in Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD) and 20 in Cuttack UPD.”

Apart from the personal number used by police officers above the rank of Inspectors in the commissionerate police, separate permanent mobile numbers have been issued to each police station. This number will be available to the public, who can contact the inspector concerned directly in case of an emergency, the Commissioner said.

Earlier, all inspectors were using an official mobile number which are displayed in the Commissionerate Police website, but the number remained with the Inspectors in-charge (IICs). Once an officer gets transferred to another place, there was a problem, as the same number was no longer used by the officer causing lots of problems for the residents of an area in case of an emergency.

“With a permanent mobile number provided to each police station in-charge in the Twin-City, citizens can now contact the IIC deputed at the concerned police station without asking for the number used by the new inspector,” said the Commissioner.

It is a part of the community policing system initiative which would help in building a healthy relationship between people and the police, he said.

Dr. Sharma further said, “Using the CUG number, a special group will be formed on which people in distress can upload news and photos to communicate tgem to all including me. Acting on the information prompt action will be taken to solve their problems.”

Each IIC in a concerned police station was advised to hand over the permanent number to the next senior officer in his absence.

BSNL has been roped in to provide CUG to the commissionerate police officials.
