Watch video: Fishing cat rescued in Odisha’s Brahmagiri

Brahmagiri: A rare fishing cat was rescued here last night. The medium-sized wild cat was handed over to the forest department.

According to reports, the fishing cat was separated from its mother while attacking two passersby at Moti Chhak on Sunamuhin-Barakudi road in Brahmagiri yesterday night.

While the mother fishing cat fled the spot hearing the noise of the locals, its baby was caught by the locals.

Later, the locals handed over the wild cat to the Brahmagiri officials.

The fishing cat (scientific name – Prionailurus viverrinus) is placed in Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. These wild animals are mainly found in Chilika shore.

The species are now on extinction due to destruction of wetlands.
