Five get lifer for murder of Odisha businessman

A local court in Odisha’s Jajpur yesterday sentenced five persons to life for the murder of a businessman over three years ago.

While pronouncing the quantum of punishment, Additional District and Sessions Judge Rohitlal Panda convicted Meherban Ali, Sultan Ali, Bebula Ali, Liaquat Ali and Irfan Ali for the murder of one Shaikh Sajan on April 3, 2012.

The court pronounced them guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after examining 17 witnesses in the case.

Shaikh Sajan, a local businessman, was gunned down by the convicts in broad daylight while he was talking to someone over mobile phone in front of his house, the prosecution said.

Eight accused involved in the crime shot Shaikh dead in front of his at Upper Baruhan village, over three years ago. They, in the age group of 30-35, all belonged to Matabad village.

While five accused were apprehended, two are still at large and one died few months after the incident.
