In five years, 858 farmers committed suicide in Odisha

As many as 858 farmers have committed suicide in the state in the last five years between 2009 and 2014, Odisha Revenue Minister Bijayshree Routray informed the state Assembly today.

In his reply to a query, Revenue Minister Bijayshree Routray informed the House that 858 farmers have committed suicide in the state in five years and the government has not provided any compensation to their families.

The minister told the House based on information gathered from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As per the data with NCRB, 154 persons committed suicide in 2009, 162 in 2010, 144 in 2011, 146 in 2012, 150 in 2013 and 102 persons ended their lives in 2014.
