Flashback 2017: Top 6 heinous crimes in Odisha

Amidst excitement in the air to welcome new year and bid farewell to outgoing 2017, several shocking incidents and sensational crimes during the year could not be overlooked. The crimes including murder, rape, suicide, obscene videos hit the headlines in media.

Here are top six crimes reported by end of this year.

BJD councillor’s murder in Chhatarpur

The murder of BJD leader and councillor Laxmidutta Pradhan of Chhatarpur Notified Area Council (NAC) was the most heinous crime in 2017.

Pradhan was brutally killed by around 10-12 miscreants who attacked him with sword and sharp weapons at his house near LIC Colony on September 16 in Chhatrapur. When Pradhan’s younger brother came to rescue him, the assailants did not spare him. The duo was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where Pradhan succumbed to his injuries.

Police arrested several persons including BJP district secretary Krushnachandra Nayak in connection with the brutal murder. Later BJP faced criticism after Nayak revealed BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra’s name who had allegedly helped him for hiding in Uttarakhand.

Kunduli gangrape

A minor girl was allegedly gang raped by four armed jawans of the Central paramilitary forces involved in anti-Maoist operations in Odisha’s Koraput district. The gang rape still remains a mystery. The incident took place when the class IX student was returning home from school near Kunduli market. She was gang raped by four armed men in BSF fatigue near Sorishpadar village under Pottangi police station limits on Oct 10.

The victim was initially rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Kunduli and was later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

The condition of the victim was earlier stated to be critical and she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The incident sparked off political controversy after the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) of Odisha police denied involvement of BSF jawans in the crime.

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) asked the state ST & SC Development Department to provide an interim aid of Rs 50,000 to the mother of Kunduli ‘gangrape‘ victim.

Engineering student kills friend’s mother for cash

An engineering student was arrested by Odisha police for allegedly killing his friend’s mother while he was committing loot in her house at Irrigation Colony here in Koraput district on October 17.

The accused Aditya Mohanty (19) while opening the almirah inside the woman’s house in a bid to loot cash, he was caught red handed by her following which he strangulated her to death.

Woman killed by beau in Kanan Vihar

A woman working as a nurse in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar was found dead at a rented house in Kanan Vihar area on September 25. Commissionerate police cracked the case with arrest of the deceased’s boyfriend Pradyumna Parida.

Pradyumna worked as a supervisor in the same hospital where victim Haseena Das used to work as a nurse and both were in a relationship. During his relationship with the victim, Pradyumna Parida never disclosed about his marital status while he was already married. Pradyumna felt that the victim had developed relationship with someone else and he was objecting to that. Further, it appeared that in the later stage the victim didn’t want to continue her relationship with the accused. However, the accused insisted for continuing with his relationship with the victim as a result of which this incident happened. On the fateful day, the accused had visited the victim’s place. He had a quarrel with the victim and had later slit her throat with a kitchen knife, police said.

Suspecting wife’s fidelity, Man posts video of FB before committing suicide

Social media was used as the medium to express feelings and tell truth before taking extreme step to end life. A person of Gadabhingura village under Sadar police limits in Puri district posted a video on Facebook to before committing suicide on Nov 9. In the video he revealed his wife’s extramarital affair with her beau.

The video was posted by Santanu Patra, the deceased. He said in the video that his wife, who was working as a nurse at a private nursing home in Cuttack, had a love affair with a youth of Jagatsinghpur namely Amaresh Swain before their marriage and was pregnant.

Santanu further alleged in the video that his wife had “sexual relationship” with Amaresh after their marriage as well.

Even after the deceased’s wife refuted the allegation leveled by her hubby before death, police arrested her and her boyfriend Amaresh Swain with whom Santanu was suspecting her of having an extramarital affair.

ITER sex video goes viral on social media

Several sex videos went viral on social media platforms this year. Among the videos, the one sex video featuring two students of ITER college in Bhubaneswar had grabbed the headlines in July.

Commissionerate police Bhubaneswar arrested Aditya Raj, the accused, for posting the sex video and making it viral on social media.

The video featuring intimate moments of Aditya Raj and his girl friend of the same engineering college was recorded on selfie mode. He allegedly shared 1.13 min-sex video with his friends on Whatsapp following which it went viral.

However, the accused pleaded innocence saying that he has no idea about the incident. Police recorded the statement of the girl under Section 161 of the CrPC.

Aditya confessed before police that both were in a relationship and the video was recorded two years ago with mutual consent. However, the video was transferred to other device without their knowledge, he told police, adding that the clip was in possession of both.
