Flood Alert in Four Districts

With major rivers flowing above the danger mark in some places following heavy rainfall in the catchment, the threat of floods is looming large across at least 4 districts. The district collectors of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur ahve been asked to be on high alert for any eventualities, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister S N Patro said.

The alert was sounded in the wake of water level rising in several rivers including Subarnarekha, Jalaka, Baitarani and Mahanadi.
Interacting with the collectors through video conferencing earlier in the day the chief minister Naveen Patnaik directed the collectors of the four districts to ensure sufficient stocks of food, medicines and other essential materials were kept ready, he said.
The district collectors were also asked to keep the cyclone shelter centres, school buildings and other similar structures to accommodate affected people in flood prone areas, said Patro.


In north Baleswar, Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers are in spate. River Subarnarekha has crossed the danger mark at Rajghat in Jaleswar, while Jalaka was flowing above the danger level at Mathani near Basta in Balasore district.

Paddy fields in low lying areas in Bhograi, Jaleswar and Basta block have been submerged by flood waters affecting 19 villages in Bhograi, Jaleswar and Basta block in Balasore district, a preliminary official report said.

Flood waters inundated several areas in Subarnapur district as well, affecting road communication.

Similarly, river Baitarani was rising menacingly, sources said.
