Flyover collapse issue storms Odisha Assembly

Bhubaneswar: The Bomikhal under-construction flyover collapse issue rocked Odisha Assembly today as Opposition members created ruckus over the matter in the House forcing the Speaker to adjourn it multiple times.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, several Congress and BJP members rushed to the well of the House and shouted slogans demanding resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while he was making a statement in the house over the incident.

Congress chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati stood on a chair and tried to snatch Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat’s microphone.

Unable to run the House amid uproar, Amat adjourned the Assembly initially for an hour and then till 3 PM.

Noisy scenes prevailed even after the House reassembled at 3 PM as Congress members created ruckus resulting in another adjournment till 4 PM and further till 5 PM.

The Speaker convened an all-party meeting to restore normalcy in the House.

“One precious human life was lost and 11 persons were injured in the incident. The injured persons were immediately rushed to Capital Hospital and AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Special arrangements were made for their treatment. Assistance of Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned in favour of the family of late Satyabrata Patnaik who lost his life in the tragic incident. The state government will bear the entire expenditure for treatment of the injured persons. The condition of all the injured persons is stable,” the CM said speaking to reporters outside the House.

“The concerned deputy executive engineer and assistant engineer have been placed under suspension. The case is under investigation. A high-level inquiry has also been ordered. My government will ensure that stringent and exemplary action is taken against all persons responsible for this tragic incident,” he added.
