Food poisoning in Odisha Sevashram: One dead, 60 taken ill

Nayagarh, Aug 31:

A girl student died while over 60 girl students including a teacher and a school guard were taken ill after consuming contaminated food at Kendua Sevashram under Ranpur police station limits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Saturday night.

According to reports, 62 students of the Sevashram fell ill after taking food in their hostel in the night.

The Sevashram authorities rushed the sick students to the government hospital in Tangi after some of them suffered from vomitting, loose motions and high fever.

However, one of them, Mini Majhi from the Gajapati district died, on her way to the hospital.

The deceased girl student has been identified as Mini Majhi of Gajapati district.

Till reports last came in, 30 students are still undergoing treatment at the Tangi hospital while the condition of six students is stated to be critical.

    PRAYER FOR RELIEF AND ACTION
    1. Urge the Commission to order to Odisha government to pay compensation of Rs 10, 00,000/- (Rupees Ten Lakh) to the family members of deceased girl student named Mini Majhi, Rs 1,00, 000/- (Rupees One Lakh) to each girl student who suffered from ill health and mental agony and further pray to recover the amount of compensation from the erring public servant/s who is/are responsible for the human rights violation.

    2. Urge the Commission to order Odisha government to give a report on the living standards of tribal children in institutions under ST & SC Development Department of Odisha.

    3. Urge the Commission to order the Odisha government to investigate the negligence of duty by ST & SC Development Department of Odisha and to take legal action against the erring employees responsible for negligence of duty.

    4. Any other action the Commission may deem appropriate.
