Former Odisha fire DGP Binay Behera passes away

Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha Director General of Police (Home Guard and Fire Services) Binay Kumar Behera passed away this evening at a private hospital following a brief illness.

Sources said Behera was admitted to a private hospital here just a day after his retirement as he fell sick. He was 60.

A 1982 batch IPS officer, had retired from service on October 31 this year.

The retired cop breathed his last at around 10.35 pm and was undergoing treatment for pneumonia. He was put on ventilator support, sources said.

Worth mentioning, Behera, a native of Kalahandi district, was the first first Commissioner of Police of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate of Police in the State.

The deceased IPS officer had also served as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Orissa State Road Transport Corporation at Cuttack.

“It was a shocking and unbelievable news that he (Binay Behera) passed away at such an early age. It is a huge loss for our State,” said former State police DG S.N. Tewary who had worked with him for some years.

Tewary, recalling some time spent with the deceased IPS officer, he further said that Behera was a big animal lover, mostly elephant.
