Police today arrested former Odisha MLA and suspended BJP leader Jayanarayan Mishra as a precautionary measure to avoid untoward incident during Hanuman Jayanti celebration in Sambalpur.

Mishra termed his arrest as an assault on Sanatana religion.

Supporters of Mishra staged protest against police at BJP party office by lying on the ground to prevent his detention.

Sources said that police arrived in the party office to detain Mishra in view of the past incidents and to maintain law and order during Hanuman Jayanti procession in town.

Earlier in the day, police had detained eight persons including four women in view of possible disruptions during procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in Sambalpur.
