Former OOA president Bibhu Sarkar passes away

Eminent sports organizer, former president of Odisha Olympic Association (OOA) and well-known lawyer Bibhu Prasad Sarkar passed away at Kalinga Hospital here on Tuesday.

He was 74.

Sarkar was recently admitted to the VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla after he was diagnosed with a tumor in his brain but following the advice of the doctors there, he was shifted to Kalinga Hospital here. However, the doctors after removing the tumor, found that he was suffering from cancer.

The second son of Prahllad Sarkar of Bolangir, Bibhu Prasad was born in 1940.

After completing his degree in Law from Madhusudan Law College in Cuttack in 1963, he cleared the Odisha Civil Services Examinations in 1964.

However, he did not join the government job and began his profession as a lawyer at the Bolangir Bar.

He was the only non-political person to be elected as the president of OOA from 2000 to 2004.

Besides, he was also the president of the Odisha Volleyball Association for 24 years.

Being a brilliant teacher in Law, Sarkar was the principal of Bolangir Law College from 1984 to 2003.

He was also the government prosecutor of Bolangir during the tenure of his childhood friend Narsingh Mishra as the Law minister.

His last rites were performed at the Swargadwara at Puri on Tuesday evening.

Secretary of Odisha Cricket Association Asirbad Behera, working president of Bolangir District Sports Council Dr Srikara Mishra, secretary Harinarayan Pujari, former secretary Satrughna Singh, sportsperson Dwarika Panda, leader of Koshal Kranti Dal Pramod Mishra and trade union leader Lalit Nayak have deeply condoled the demise of Sarkar.
