Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria slams Virat Kohli, says Sourav Ganguly won’t tolerate indiscipline

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Team India skipper Virat Kohli’s leadership has come under scrutiny after several media reports claimed that the 32-year-old misbehaved with some senior players in the Test team.

Amid the media frenzy, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria said that Kohli’s behavior will not be tolerated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) bosses Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah.

“Virat Kohli’s captaincy is in a dilemma because BCCI’s top bosses in Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah won’t tolerate indiscipline towards anybody. They won’t see if he is a big-ticket player and treat everyone the same way. Unlike Pakistan, where there are such concerns, I don’t think it happens in India because a top-notch cricketer is the BCCI president,” Kaneria said.

“He (Ganguly) changed Indian cricket and he won’t see different players in different ways. Thus, I trust the BCCI to ensure that in future no player behaves roughly with their teammates,” said Kaneria on his YouTube channel.

Kaneria added that Kohli’s aggressiveness on the pitch is well known but he should not have misbehaved with his teammates. The former Pakistan spinner said that Kohli should take a leaf out of MS Dhoni’s book by backing his players.

“Virat Kohli’s aggression while captaining is a known thing, but misbehaving with your own players isn’t acceptable. He needs to follow the culture set by MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni dragged the players along with him despite win or loss by backing them. Hence, with the T20 World Cup looming and with Ravichandran Ashwin also part of the squad, Kohli must handle things carefully,” Kaneria said.

Virat Kohli is set to step down as Team India’s T20 captain after the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled later this year.
