Five Maoists killed in gunfight with security forces in Odisha

Phulbani: Five Maoists were gunned down during an exchange of fire between the ultras and SOG in a forest near Sirki village under Belghar police limits of Kandhamal district today.

Initially, four bodies of Maoists were recovered from the spot. During the combing operation following the encounter, the security personnel recovered another body of a Maoist and seized a country made gun from the forest in the afternoon.

On the basis of reliable intelligence input, an operation was launched on Kalahandi-Kandhamal border on September 8.  Two composite teams of SOG and DVF had participated in this operation . An exchange of fire took place at around 11 AM today. Following heavy firing from the ultras, a team of SOG and DVF resorted to retaliatory fire, said an official statement issued by Odisha police.

“The exchange of fire lasted for around 30 minutes, during which four Maoists were neutralized and a SOG Jawan suffered injuries. More teams of SOG, DVF and CRPF have been sent to the area for combing and search operation,” the statement added.

Earlier on July 5,  five Maoists including two women were gunned down by the security forces in Sirla Reserve  forest area under Tumudibandha police limits in the district followed by two more deaths in the same forest  on July 23.

On August 17,  Maoists torched four vehicles,including a truck and a tractor, engaged in construction of a road at Kanjal Ghat in Baliguda of the district.
