Five pilgrims killed in road mishap in Odisha

Five persons were killed and four others seriously injured when a vehicle in which they were travelling collided with the side bars of a bridge near Chingudipur Chhak in Odisha’s Bhadrak district in the early hours today.

According to reports, nine pilgrims from Bankura district of West Bengal had gone to Puri for the darshan of the Lords at the Shri Jagannath Temple.

After having the darshan of the Lords, they were on the way to their native place in a Bolero jeep when the driver lost control of the vehicle as the result of which the vehicle collided with the side bars of a bridge near Chingudipur Chhak on the outskirts of Bhadrak town killing three pilgrims on the spot and leaving the six others including the driver seriously injured.

The mishap took place at about 4.30 AM, eyewitnesses said.

Following information, police arrived at the spot and rushed seven injured pilgrims to the district headquarters hospital where two pilgrims succumbed to their injuries.

Later, four pilgrims were rushed SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where their condition was stated to be critical.

The bodies were later taken for post mortem.

The identity of the deceased and injured pilgrims was not known, police said.
