Fraudster nabbed by Odisha police

Quick Action Team (QAT) of Odisha’s Commissionerate Police today nabbed a person for impersonating as a CBI officer and for his alleged involvement in extortion of money from a gymnasium owner in the city.

Police sources said the accused was involved in several other cases of extortion and made lakhs of rupees by taking people for a ride.

The accused has been identified as Satyajit Panda alias Rajat Panda, who hails from Bhadrak district.

Police have seized a scooter, various fake documents including a voter identity card and a pair of uniform of the Orissa Police from the accused.

Briefing newsmen here, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi said, the QAT team nabbed Panda following a complaint lodged by Avinash Sahani, the owner of a multi gym, from whom Panda had extorted Rs 45,000, by pretending to be a CBI officer and someone closely associated with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“The accused told Sahani he could facilitate the grant of huge amount of funds from the WHO if he enters into a business deal with him,” said Bhoi.

In a similar way, Panda collected Rs 45,000 from an individual in 2013 by promising to facilitate the installation of s Vodafone tower on his roof top. A FIR filed by the victim Krushnaprasad Sahu was registered in Badagada police station.

The same year Panda was caught by Laxmisagar police for taking loans in exchange of fake gold ornaments.“Before that Panda took Rs 40,000 from Khandagiri-based Manaswini Tripathy under the pretext of providing a well paid job to her brother in the Odisha High Court,” said Bhoi, adding, there are several other cases against Panda in Bhadrak district.

Interestingly, the police have not been able to ascertain the true identity of Panda, as in the voter ID card his name is mentioned as Satyajit Panda, but in his school documents his name is Rajat Panda.

DCP Bhoi said in order to know his true identity, they would take the help of Bhadrak Police.
