Free Wi-Fi at Puri, Cuttack railway stations soon

After Odisha’s capital city, two more towns in the state will be covered under the high-speed Internet service provided by Google in collaboration with RailTel in the coming months.

During the launching of free Wi-Fi service at the railway station here today, a top official of the public sector undertaking announced that the service will be extended to Puri and Cuttack railway stations in the coming months. While the service is expected to go live at the Pilgrim town ahead of annual Rath Yatra this year, the service will be offered in Cuttack next.

“This year high-speed Internet service will be provided at 100 railway stations across the country including Puri and Cuttack. We will try our best to provide the service at Puri ahead of the Rath Yatra to be celebrated on July 7 this year,” Rajendra Kumar Bahuguna, Chairman and Managing Director, RailTel Corporation said.

Under the Digital India initiative, Railways will be providing internet facilities to the passengers at 100 busiest stations by the end of this year. The service will be rolled out at 400 stations across the country covering all major rail premises in subsequent phases.

“We had promised to provide free Internet service to people across the country. This year, more than 100 railway stations will be provided with free Internet facility. I am happy to announce that Odisha’s capital city Bhubaneswar has become the second city after Mumbai where the service has been provided,” Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu said.

The free Wi-Fi service will enable visitors and passengers to access Internet through smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Among others, Rajya Sabha MPs Pyarimohan Mohapatra and Baishnab Parida, Minister of state for Railways Manoj Kumar Sinha and other senior officials of Railways were present on the occasion.
