Gambler bites cop during raid in Odisha; 11 held

Berhampur: Throwing an open challenge, a group of gamblers attacked  police personnel at Khanjapadia Street in Lochapada under Sadar police limits on the city outskirts late last night when the later had gone to the spot for a raid. Reportedly, Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Bibhuti was injured in the attack.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of  police conducted a raid on a gambling den at Khanjapadia Street last night. Seeing the cops, the anti-socials attacked them. One of them also bit SI  Bibhuti. Besides, the miscreants vandalised the police vehicle during the confrontation. However, the police team overpowered the gamblers and arrested 11 persons.

“We have seized Rs 8,000 cash from their possessions and further investigation is on in this connection,” said police.

It may be mentioned here that gambling is considered as a part of celebrations at several places across Ganjam district from Durga Puja till Kumar Purnima and anti-socials become more active during the period.
