Ganesh Jayanti is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh. Is is celebrated on Shukla Chaturthi during Magha lunar month.

Devotees of Lord Ganesh observe a fast on this day. Before worshipping the deity, devotees take bath in water mixed with til (sesame seeds) after smearing a paste of the same substance on their body.

Special offerings are made to Lord Ganesh on this occasion. Shrines and temples are decorated for the occasion.

Food offerings of ladoos made of til and jaggery are made on this day.

In some households and temples, small images of Ganesha are placed in cradles and worshipped.

As per ancient customs, it is prohibited to sight the moon on Ganesh Jayanti, wherein a prohibitive time period is set by the almanacs.
