Gangster Raja Acharya gets bail, but to stay in jail

Bhubaneswar: The Court of SDJM here today granted bail to gangster Raja Acharya. However, he will not be released from jail as Twin City Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi directed to book him under the National Security Act (NSA).

The bail was granted to Raja as the chargesheet couldn’t be submitted within the stipulated time.

He was arrested on October 17 on charges of extortion. The anti-extortion wing of the Commissionerate Police arrested the gangster over his involvement in an extortion case.

“Raja was extorting Rs 20,000 from a person every month in connection with construction of a house,” a police official had said.

Earlier on November 13, 2019, the Malgodown police had arrested him in connection with an attempt to murder case registered in 2004.

Around 40 cases were registered against Raja in various police stations in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. He was the main accused in killing judo coach Biranchi Das on April 13, 2008 here.
