“The committee will go for a revolutionary protest if the government doesn’t pay heed to our demands,” said an executive member of the committee at a press conference held in Bhubaneswar yesterday.

“The committee will stage zone level rallies and gatherings at Baripada, Cuttack, Chhatrapur and Bolangir from February 22 to March 10 starting from Baripada. We will put the State and the Union Governments on notice to ensure permanent employment and monthly remuneration to us during this period. We have also decided to strengthen the organization from the grassroots at a two-day workshop,” said the State President of the committee Laxmidhar Biswal.

The committee also discussed the Right to Information, cleanliness programmes and conducted a Yoga Shivir at the two day workshop.

It may be noted that Gaon Sathis have been demanding their rights since a long time. Earlier we had reported on December 5 here that they had decided not to call off stir despite the Odisha government’s assurance to look into their demands.

Gaon Sathis were recruited primarily to assist in implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in villages. Two people from each village having the highest educational qualification were appointed as Gaon Sathis.
